About

My passion for photography ignited in 1980 when I spent a few transformative months in Los Angeles. Despite being a young traveller with limited resources, I borrowed a small 110 film camera from a friend and embarked on a journey of discovery. This humble camera accompanied me everywhere, capturing images of flying fish, dolphins, whales, majestic mountain ranges, serene beaches, stunning sunsets and sunrises, and even a few Hollywood stars.

Upon returning home, I eagerly developed my photos, only to find that most of them were of poor quality due to the limitations of the camera. Disheartened but undeterred, I disposed of the unsalvageable photos along with the borrowed camera. This experience, occurring long before the advent of mobile phones and computers, marked a turning point for me. Realising how much the world has changed since then only deepens my appreciation for the journey.

Determined to improve my craft, I invested in my first quality camera in 1981: an Olympus OM2n SLR, followed by an OM1n and an assortment of lenses. In the pre-internet era, my quest for knowledge led me to camera magazines, libraries, and travel guides from AA and RAC, seeking inspiration for beautiful locations across the UK. Armed with this information, I planned trips meticulously, exploring and capturing the diverse landscapes of Derbyshire, Wales, and beyond. The quieter roads of that time allowed for smoother, more spontaneous adventures.

During these travels, I encountered small galleries where passionate photographers had turned their love for landscapes into thriving businesses. Inspired, I dreamed of following in their footsteps, but life had other plans for me. Though my Olympus OM2n still holds a special place in my collection, it has been some time since I last used it.

For many years, I remained dedicated to film photography, but in 2005, I embraced the digital revolution with a Panasonic Lumix for my European travels. This was later upgraded to a Nikon Coolpix in 2015. In preparation for a two-week winter trip to Norway in 2019, I decided it was time for a more advanced camera. After extensive research, I chose the Nikon D750, my first full-frame digital camera, and embarked on a steep learning curve to master its capabilities and since then I have purchased additional Nikon Cameras and a range of lenses to work with.

Modern technology has revolutionised the way we plan and execute photography trips. With tools like Google Maps, route planners, satnavs, mobile phones, and booking.com, organising trips is now remarkably easy compared to the old days. However, the journey itself has become more complex with increased traffic and speed cameras. Despite these challenges, my love for capturing the beauty of the world around me remains as strong as ever.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope my work inspires you to see the beauty around you that often goes unnoticed.
